Hong Kong Anarchitecture Bananas: Artists who reclaim space
Artist Commune, Hong Kong
29 Mar – 17 Apr 2008

Hong Kong Anarchitecture Bananas: Artists who reclaim space is a group exhibition exploring artists' interpretations of urban planning, architecture and design. It will be held at Artist Commune, Hong Kong, during 29 Mar – 17 Apr 2008.

Curated by artists Lee Chun Fung and Michael Lee Hong Hwee, this exhibition aims to provide a platform for Hong Kong artists to explore their personal takes on public space. Adding the prefix ‘An’ to the word ‘architecture’ yields the exhibition's keyword ‘Anarchitecture’, suggesting an ‘anarchic’ slant in the definition and use of public space. Amidst city living, such as in Hong Kong, where space is limited and also strictly defined, these artists offer alternative views of how one can think, feel and do with space in refreshing ways.

On show are works by 33 established and emerging artists dealing with different subthemes including personal and collective memory, private and public space, studio space, voyeurism, destruction, discipline and disorder, graffiti, town planning, and familial relationship. These are explored through a diversity of approaches: drawing, collage, photography, sculpture, architectural model, installation, video, miniature, and book art. The works include: Chihoi’s drawings in which Central’s IFC (International Financial Centre) comes alive; Yeung Hok Tak’s comics of graffiti texts behind bus seats; Li Loi-yau’s super-realistic miniature of a wood workshop; Toser Pak’s group performance of crossing the street in a horizontal straight line; Clara Cheung’s popup version of Queen’s Pier; Andrew Guthrie’s multi-video installation peeping into people’s homes at night, and Frog King’s graffiti expressions.

This exhibition is co-organised by Artist Commune and Studio Bibliothèque, Hong Kong. It is the third installment in the latter’s Things Artists Do series.

Artist: Adrian Wong Ho Yin, Almond Chu, Andrew S. Guthrie, Annie Wan Lai Kuen, Au Wah Yan, Chihoi, Clara Cheung, Cornelia Erdmann, Doris Wong Wai Yin, Ducky Tse Chi Tak, Frog King, Galen Tse Kin Wah, Homan Ho Man Chung, Jeff Leung Chin Fung and Cheung Wai Lok, Justin Wong, Kacey Wong, Kady Fung Ka Yee, Kwan Sheung Chi, Lau Chi Chung, Lee Chun Fung, Li Loi Yau, Max Tsoi Ka Wang, Michael Lee Hong Hwee, Ocean Leung Yu Tung, Roy Ng Ting Ho, Start From Zero, Suki Chan, Tozer Pak Sheung Chuen, Warren Leung Chi Wo, WAS, Yeung Hok Tak, Yentl Tong Ying Tung, Yuen Kin Leung

Time never leaves its trace in Hong Kong

With the economy evolves and things change dramatically fast, we see extinction of countless historical buildings; due to the execution of the economy of scale, ways we used to make our living becomes history. For things that are lucky enough to survive, they have already lost their original touches.

No wonder the term “collective memories” is always around us these days. More and more Hong Kong people now realize that the “local culture” is gradually fading out.

As such, we, a group of miniature maniacs, are producing miniature displays capturing typical past and present scenes of Hong Kong. For example, the soon to be demolished Wan Chai market, the now conserved prawn shop in Wanchai that survives the city re-development project, snap shots of busy streets, the defunct “Silver Dragon Café”, traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine store, Tin - roof House, the close to extinct barber shop on street corners, Chinese embroidery shop, paper product shop; while at the same time, there are also modern boutique-styled Chocolate shop, Cake shop , Speakeasy private kitchen and Sandwiches shop.

We sincerely hope that these displays will bring back your good old memories.

Loi has a few new work pieces( Chinese Furniture, Food ,plants and some more )for showing and sale. Please go to the Online shop.

The Inauguration of the Hong Kong Miniature Club

The popularity of meticulous clay flower and dollhouse has grown in Hong Kong since the introduction from Japan. Numerous clay-making centres, institutions or online courses have been set up for enthusiasts. Recently, this craft has become a favourite hobby and pastime particularly amongst the young amateurs.

For the promotion of 1:12 scale miniature development, a brand new Hong Kong based miniature club is set up and has started to recuit members.

In the meantime, a quarterly Hong Kong miniature magazine “ Hong Kong Miniature World “ is in progress for publication.

The first issue will be released in October, 2003. Further information on the contents will be announced later.
